Baptized Together in Lake Michigan

One of the things that attracted me to Dustin in the first place was the fact that he loves God and has never been afraid to admit it.  It was always very important to me to end up with someone who is a Christian; who shares the same values as I do; someone who puts God first and foremost in all things. The first time Dustin and I discussed our religious views, I already knew I really liked him at that point, but it made me fall for him a lot deeper when I found out that we believed the same things because I knew at that point that I was “allowed” to end up with him down the line if everything worked out for us. I had made my fair share of mistakes in life but one thing always remained clear- that God was real and that he had sent his son Jesus Christ to save us. So I had always promised myself that I wouldn’t end up with a man who didn’t agree with this basic truth or didn’t love God before me and before himself.

Fast-forward 5 years. Dustin and I took a pre-marriage class at Resurrection Life Church in Grandville and it was really good for us. We learned a lot, and strengthened our bond together through seeking God.

Then on July 11, 2015, we vowed in front of God and our families and friends to keep God in the center of our marriage, no matter what. Dustin made a sign from old barn wood and I hand painted it with a quote from Ecclesiastes 4:12 “A cord of three strands is not easily broken”. It hung near the head table during our reception for all to see. We wanted everyone to know that we would make a constant effort to lead a life together that would be pleasing to God, keeping him intertwined in our path along the way. And we wanted God to know that we knew we couldn’t do any of it without him.

Now a year later, we have been involved in a Bible Study that my dad started called “Family Growth” that has really been helping us to grow spiritually as individuals and as a couple. I have wanted to be baptized for quite awhile now so we made the decision to be baptized together in Lake Michigan in our hometown. Lake Michigan is a bit temperamental when it comes to staying warm from day to day in the summer months so we waited for a week when the weather was nice and then had an impromptu baptism on a favorite beach of ours on July 20, 2016. It was a beautiful sunny evening, the temperature was close to 90 degrees and the water was about 75 degrees. We couldn’t have asked for a better night! My mom and dad, Dustin’s mom along with his dad and stepmom, my sister and her husband and my cousin came to witness our baptism. We had made the decision to follow Christ separately many years before and it was a special moment to be baptized together and it meant a lot to have our loved ones there with us.

To further let the world know that we have chosen to make God the center of our lives, we wanted to share with you this story and some photos of our baptism!

Matthew 28:19-20
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

It was a perfectly beautiful day with our family. The sun was out the lake was flat calm and 75 degrees. Just like our wedding day the days planned around God are so perfect.
