Following Your Heart

“The first step in getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are.”- Author unknown

Too many people live life without pursuing their passions. Too often, people become comfortable and complacent with their current situations rather than actively seeking ways to live the lives they have envisioned. They let job security or a fat paycheck prevent them from taking a risk that would be well worth it in the end. A chance to be the people their hearts want them to be. A chance to be free.

Just this morning a woman I work with started talking about how her true passion is architecture and I could see the way her eyes lit up as she spoke about it. Yet she has spent the last 27 years working night shift in retail. Even one of my bosses told me one day how he went to school to be an optometrist and how he loved helping people with their eyes. He said he still dreams of opening an eyeglass shop of his own “someday”. Despite those dreams, he has been working in retail for 13 years and he just accepted a high stress, high paying promotion to work at a large volume retail store which will require most all of his time. It got me thinking about my own life and why I haven’t taken the plunge yet to actively seek out my dreams.

It’s shocking how frequently I hear stories like these. Far too many people are prisoners of their own lives. Why don’t we do what we want to do in life? Security? Fear? Laziness? Not knowing where to start? I too, have given in to the slavery that is Corporate America simply because it was easier than starting my own business and it offered a steady paycheck. But I don’t want to live my life with 2 days a week to do the things I want to do and 2 weeks a year to feel like my own person. I want to look back on my life and know that I lived; that I did what was in my heart.

I once heard a quote that said, “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Can you imagine what our world would be like if each of us was able to do the things that we yearned to do? People would be happier, kinder, less stressed, and more fulfilled! God has put a unique desire for something in all of us that makes us who we are. Ignoring that is missing your purpose, and missing out on living life to its fullest.

2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity but of power and love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.” He wants us to have big dreams and to go after them with zeal!

Dustin and I have put our faith in Him and we trust that He will help us achieve our dreams so we can get on with the lives we are meant to live. We are trusting him to help us find a way. I urge you to find what your passion is and pursue it with all you’ve got! And remember, having faith in God includes faith in His timing so it might not happen as quickly as you would hope, but if you trust that God has our best interests in mind and truly believe that He can do anything, He will give you your dreams, or he’ll have something even better waiting for you.

  1. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
    Mark 11:24
But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
    James 1:6
I do not doubt that are prayers will be answered and our dreams fulfilled.

  2. The Bible also says in (Proverbs 29:18)
-“Where there is no vision the people perish…”
Keep close to Jesus and He will keep close to you!! You must pursue Him just as steadily as you are pursuing your Dream! Focus on your goal, that being Jesus, the author and finisher of your Faith, (Hebrews 12:2) not on what’s going on around you. Grow towards Him because it is He you are working for, not man! (Colossians 3:23) Looking Forward to hearing about the adventures you will have and share!!!
